Product Description

The Add-A-Motor Automatic Drapery Opener (ADO) provides an economical way to control your draperies and vertical blinds. This system features time schedule and remote control operation, traverse, and it even rotates vertical blinds. Stop positions are independently adjustable, from all the way open to all the way closed, and anywhere in between. Installation takes about 15 minutes! The motor attaches to the loop end of your window covering cord or chain without modification. The motor has a loop-end system for cord or ballchain; no need to cut or replace drapery cords. It can traverse drapery or vertical blinds up to 12 feet wide (center opening) and 10 feet wide one-way opening. Expand the system functionality by using the motor with an ordinary lamp timer switch or various wireless remote controllers.

4Great for about 2 years
By D. Meriwether
These work well with X10 or, preferably, Insteon home automation set ups. Automatically opening and closing drapes is a great way to optimize your HVAC energy usage and it's just nice to have the drapes open on warm, sunny days. Installation was very easy with just one screw. There are three down sides. The first is that the state of the drapes is difficult to determine with the home automation sensors. Being a binary motor; ether open or closed, the drapes can go out of phase and be open when you expect them to be closed and visa versa. The solution is probably not within the scope of the Add-a-Motor, but it can be a minor pain. The second issue is that if the drapes are in any way obstructed, they may not close, or sometimes open, fully. It seems that main reason my drapes are only partially closed is the drapery rod. The rod is one of those, one-size-fits-a-range-of-widths types and has two rod components that help to telescope the rod to fit the specific width of the window opening. The transition between the two components can cause a few of the track runners to catch or provide resistance to smoothly closing. When this happens, the fix is pretty simple, just open the drapes again, turn off the power to the motor (typically handled by a timed home-automation command) then close the drapes again. You can partially remedy this situation by applying more tension to the drapery cord (sliding the motor another notch or two down the wall attachment slide) however this can put significant stress on the gears in the motor which is one of the causes for the next issue. The third issue is a much bigger pain and cost. The pulley that pulls the drapes cord is made out of a rubber substance. In the center of the rubber pulley is a white plastic star-wheel that connects to the gears within the motor. Over time, this white plastic star-wheel gets stress-hardened and eventually snaps; rendering the whole mechanism useless and requiring replacement of the entire unit. my Add-a-Motors seem to last around two years of twice-a-day use.

1Doesn't Work with Venetian Blinds
By Paul Anthony
I checked the online description and thought this would work. When I got the shipment, the instructions said that venetian blinds and chicken coops should use another model. I guess it has something to do with the up/down motion. I tried to return this, but the seller hasn't responded in weeks. I'm quite unhappy with this.

4Easy to install and use
By Ricardo Magalhães
It's a easy way to install and there is no one adjustment to do in the curtain. The unique observation is that it isn't so silent as I hope.
