Input signals may be derived from any of three sources: microphone, line, or DI. The mic input has a 10k ohm non-reactive input resistance that handles a full 26dBu signal without the need for a pad. A primary gain control provides 66dB of gain in 6dB increments for easy recall with a +/- 6dB trim for fine adjustment. A transient-optimized HPF continuously covering the range from 20-250Hz is included. In addition the usual 48V phantom power switch, phase inversion, signal present indicator and a mute switch are included on the Portico II. Inserting a plug into the Portico II's DI input selects a 3M ohm discrete FET DI circuit. This circuit includes transformer-coupled pristine topography that optimizes both the microphone and DI inputs, allowing low impedance microphones and high impedance sources such as electric guitars and basses to deliver optimum performance. Everything just sounds amazing through this piece of gear

I read a lot of magazine reviews about this unit before deciding to purchase it. All the reviews I read were extremely positive, and I was not disappointed when the unit arrived. Before purchasing the Portico II, I primarily used the Avalon Design VT737sp tube pre-amp channel strip, which is also an amazing channel strip. If I had to choose one of the two pre-amps, I would definitely choose to keep the Portico II. The Avalon is also an amazing piece of gear that has a great sound, but the Portico II has proven to have an extra edge and transparency that I prefer.The construction of the unit is solid, and the feel of the controls and knobs feels professional.The control layout is logical and flows from left to right.The pre-amp section provides plenty of gain (up to 66 dB!).The EQ section is where most of the magic happens. On other pieces of gear, if you make extreme EQ adjustments, the resulting tone can be very harsh. On the Portico II Channel, it's hard to make anything sound bad. You can tweak and experiment, and still get very musical and pleasing results with extreme EQ settings. The sound is very transparent, big, and full. There's also a built-in de-esser, which comes in very handy for vocals.The compressor is as impressive as the EQ section. There are many unique and useful controls here, one of them being a mix control allowing you to blend the compressed signal with the uncompressed signal. Again, it's difficult to produce a bad sound even with heavy compression settings.The Silk control is a unique way to add a little extra texture to your sound. It can add extra character to your sound that is otherwise uncompromised through this amazing piece of gear. Silk can give your sound some grunge and also give it a little more texture to cut through a mix.I would definitely buy the Portico II channel strip again if I had the choice. I do primarily voice work and use the Manley Reference Cardioid microphone with the Portico II. This combination has proven to be an excellent match for my needs. I've tried running my microphone directly into my computer USB digital audio interface's mic pre without the Portico II, and I definitely prefer the sound when it's run through the Portico II. I'm so spoiled now, and people always ask about what gear I used to record when they hear my recordings with the Reference Cardioid and Portico II. It's big and clear. Now you know.
