Love 'em, love 'em

First and foremost, if you're interested in these headphones, then you probably love their look. I do and everyone who sees them does as well. If you don't like the look, then it doesn't matter how they sound. But you're here because you DO like the look, so you want to know how they sound, right? In a word: wonderful.I'm one of those people who (especially now that times are tougher) researches the things I get before I buy them. I wandered the internet and looked around for headphones that I would be proud to wear, and would sound great. I came up with a couple choices in addition to these: the V-Moda Crossfades, Bowers & Wilkins P5's, and the Beats by Dre.What initially attracted me to the Aviators was the look--I was really hoping the sound quality would be good so I could get 'em. They don't disappoint. I went down to the Apple store, and tested the Crossfades (toooo warm of a sound and waaay too much bass. They have an amplifier in them, and I didn't like it. The P5's by B&W sounded good, if not a little underpowered. And really, I wanted something that covered my ears, not just sat on them. The Beats by Dre sounded good, better than the P5's on some songs, and much worse on others. The Aviators just sounded GOOD. In a direct comparison with the Beats and the P5's, I found that I loved everything about them. They sound clear, not muffled, and have a nice mix between bright and warm.In a nutshell? This is my first set of cans. I've been using in-ear headphones forever, and now was the time to upgrade. I am very happy with my purchase, and my guess is that you would be, too.

Very stylish and great sounding

There are a lot of great features about these headphones: style, sound, the in-line mic. The only drawback for me is its comfortability.First, there's the look. These cans look really good, much better than the picture on the computer screen. It's very classy and retro. The gold trim is very cool, and the shells are see-through. I've gotten many compliments on them by many strangers, both male and female (I live in New York City, so I see lots of strangers, some stranger than others). I was in Best Buy, ready to buy the same-priced Bose AE2 headphones, when I saw these. I personally think the brown/gold is the best-looking of the trio, but the black/silver are also nice. My only complaint is that sometimes the whole thing feels a little flimsy. They are light which is great, but I hope they aren't fragile. Also, the in-line mic, as convenient as it is, looks cheap, but only when looking at it close up.Sound: Well, I was in Best Buy because I was replacing a pair of Bose AE2 that had been stolen. Sad face. I actually think these headphones sound better than the Bose. Wha?? I know. There is more bass from the Aviators, and the treble sounds less brash. Comparing them to the Dre Beats Solo, I found that the Dre Beats still had better bass. But those are more expensive and are On-Ear phones, and I wanted Around-the-Ear. The only drawback is that the cups don't block out as much as sound as the Bose do. I spend a lot of time on the subway and walking along noisy city streets. The Bose were amazing in blocking out a lot of that sound - I would sometimes wear them without any music playing, just to quiet things. The Aviators are OK.Comfort: Some reviewers say that they can wear these for hours and there's no problem. For whatever reason, my ears don't agree. They get a little sore after maybe an hour or so. Too bad. The Bose AE2 are amazingly comfortable, like little pillows for your ears. That, I think, is its best attribute.Features: Here, the Aviators excel. The in-line mic is really convenient. Bose doesn't have this. Some reviewers have said that the mic is too high on the cord. I think it's just fine. The center button on the mic (for play, pause, answer, disconnect, skip forward, backward, etc) is sometimes difficult to feel, and you might end up pressing a volume button instead. But you get used to it pretty quickly. There's also a sweet leather bag for storing your headphones. The phones fold up very nicely, though it's a bit difficult to cram into the bag, and equally difficult to get out of the bag. I get nervous every time (see fragile comment above). The Bose also fold up and come with a travel bag.So, while these aren't perfect, I haven't found a not-too-expensive pair that is perfect. I went back and forth between the Aviators and the Bose. The Bose are super comfy and great at noise-blocking. The Aviators sound very good, are very attractive, and have that helpful in-line mic. I chose sound and style.PS - wired.com and cnet.com both have decent reviews of these headphones.

Music FOR My Ears

I bought these headphones about three weeks ago after considering Soul by Ludacris and comparably priced Sennheiser and Grado cans. To be honest, the looks got my attention first. How many brown headphones are there on the market anyway - especially with translucent cups?? I kinda just had to take them home. Besides, there is no great way to test headphones in a store environment, so home with me they went.Testing them out with my music over the last few weeks, I realized these are some great cans for the $150 price tag. I love the balanced approach to sound - the realization that music includes highs and mids AS WELL AS bass (I'm looking at you, Dr. Dre!) I love all kinds of music, so that balanced approach comes in handy when I'm listening to classical, jazz, salsa, doo-wop, r&b, etc. After the pleasant surprise of how these beauties sound, I fell in love with all the thoughtful touches that make up the whole package - the folding cups, the soft carrying case, and most of all, the subtle styling that says "Skullcandy has arrived." Someone, either RocNation, Skullcandy designers, maybe even JayZee himself - realized that subtlety can speak volumes. The red RocNation liner inside the carrying case, the (barely there) skull imprints on the case, the small gold skull accents on the comfortable headphone band, well done! Something else that represents welcome attention to detail - the nylon wrapped ear wire that is detachable. These days a detachable ear wire is a "must have" in any set of cans priced over $100. The nylon wrapping reduces tangling and improves durability. Of course, if the ear wire does become damaged, you can get that replaced without buying a whole new set of cans. Also, they have soft padding on the headband and memory foam in the cups. They are really comfortable to wear for long periods of time.These headphones are not noise-cancelling, but they do a great job of dampening outside sounds so you can put your focus where it belongs - on the music. I am really glad I coughed up $150 for these cans.Now here's why the Aviators got 4 stars, instead of 5. There's a mic/volume/playback control close to the top of the ear wire. For one thing, it's too close. Most importantly, it only seems to work with ipod/iphones. Supposedly, it works with other smartphones, but it doesn't work with my Android smartphone. There are plenty of other lower-priced headphones on the market with this type of control that works with all kinds of devices - not just Apple devices. Seriously, it's way past time for these accessories to be device-agnostic. The control comes across as a last-minute, chintzy addition to what is an otherwise stellar product.Bottom line: these are terrific headphones. I love the combination of retro styling and faithful sound reproduction in one very cool package.Consumer Alert: If you want these headphones with the detachable ear wire, make sure you buy the current 2012 model. The headphones released in 2011 do not have a detachable ear wire. In the stores, the 2011 headphones come in a clear plastic box. The 2012 headphones come in a solid white box with a picture of the headphones.
