I looked at this pen for 2 years before I decided to spend this much and order it online, sight unseen. WHY did I wait so long? The typical exercise pen is 8 panels, each 24" wide. It is hard to conceptualize, but 8 panels of 31" width makes a HUGE difference in space. Furthermore, the first adoption event that I went to, taking the pen to hold my rescues, was an outdoor event. Ground is NEVER perfectly even. The typical wire exercise pens would have had gaps between the bottom and the ground in some areas. Because of the drop pin assembly of this pen, the panels aren't attached at the sides. Therefore, although the top rails were uneven, they were so because each panel sat firmly on the uneven ground, leaving no gaps that would encourage the curious dog to escape. Add to that the fact that this pen is much stronger and heavier than they typical wire pens, it is simply the BEST exercise pen for your dogs. Note: it comes in gray or silver...what I chose, and in black. This gray/silver happens to be finished in a hammer look paint (looks somewhat like powder coating) which is extremely durable and chip resistant. The gray is by far the best choice if you do outdoor events, move the pen frequently, or plan on using it outdoors.

If you're not sure you might want this item, buy it. You will not be sorry. I have used mine in so many ways, and actually ordered 2 more! The panels (4) can be used to make crates for very large dogs. If your dog's a jumper, add a 5th on top secured with cable ties. They can be used to make a fence, spread end to end, either inside or outside. They come with stakes that are just long enough for tile, carpet or hardwood floors inside or my porch outside, and stakes that are longer, for putting into the ground outside. You can use these panels to go across a garage door opening, or to block off a doorway, or to build a separate fenced area in your yard. I did this for 2 weeks when I was fostering a dog in quarantine, away from my others. I kept her in a separate part of the house and let her out in this temporary "fenced" area, not in my yard where the other furbabies go. You can create any shape you like, given that you remember that each panel is 31 inches in width. This is a heavy duty playpen and study enough for my Dobergirl, as well as Shepherds, a Malinois, Labs, etc. The panels from my "playpen" are now being used to make crates for 2 foster dogs, as well as my Dobergirl's crate. The sides lock together with channels and a stake that goes through them. If you just want a playpen, it's perfect, too. If you use it for litters of puppies, you will love the fact that the pups cannot easily follow you out the door, which has a raised section you must step over. I LOVE this product.

I recently moved to an apt and needed a pen that would function as a gate, to cover one side of our patio (total of 18ft across), so our 3 chihuahuas couldn't get out. I researched and researched the internet, bought a gate with 2 extensions, returned it because it was plastic and not sturdy enough to stay straight and stand up, because of the length needed. Then I ordered this gate. We just put it up today and it is AWESOME!! Exactly what we needed. The gate has 8 panels that are 31" wide each, which covers a large area without having to order extensions. Sturdy and the pins are great for uneven ground areas. They also help with keeping the gate in place and straight. We put majority of the gate straight, with an indented area where the gate is, that goes over the walkway. Would definitely recommend!!
