By Adam Wilson
My 7yr old loves it. He's a little under average height and thin. This was his first season playing catcher so, he just used the league gear (the helmet and chest protector were too big and the leg guards fit but constantly came undone). I looked at the Wilson set first, (It's our last name so... I'm biased) but didn't want leg guards that attach with Velcro. Our coach would bounce a lot of his pitches off the plate, so my son got really good a blocking the ball(really puts the leg guards to the test). After days of research, I went with this set. The helmet fits snug but doesn't rip his ears off when he has to throw it off. The chest protector did seem a little large at first, but we got it to fit perfect. The trick is to push the slide adjuster through the slits in the y-strap and it'll fit even the skinniest of kids. On to the leg guards, They fit comfortably and stay on. I had him run around the house as fast as he could, then do some blocking drills. They didn't restrict his movement much and all the straps stayed secure. My son's knee to ankle measurement is a little under ll". We tried on a 12" pair and they were a too big and loose. Most of the gear sets are for ages 5-8 or 9-12. The 5-8 group usually have 10" leg guards (often for t-ball). the 9-12 usually have 12" and up leg guards. This is one of the only sets that have 11.5" leg guards, seems better suited for 7-9yr olds. Overall, This is just what we needed. It looks/fits great and has plenty of room to grow into.Note: Make sure the description says: Black Magic "JUNIOR"/Youth and not just "YOUTH". I finished reading reviews late at night and almost bought 9-12yr old set.

By Brian Sutton
Our son just turned 8 and playing in Cal Ripken minors. He's about 55" tall and a slender build. The gear the league supplied was just too big for him to move well and really have adequate protection. After searching some sites on how to measure for catcher's gear, he fell right in line with the sizing for this set. (12" on chest protector, just over 11" on legs)Thus far the product doesn't disappoint. The vest fits well and stays up on his shoulders where it should. I did have to move the plastic adjuster for the waist strap in to the "T" connector, but that wasn't a big deal and cinched it up enough for his slender build. The leg protectors are spot on in length and use metal hook/d-ring type of attachments instead of velcro. Helmet also adjusted up and fits well. Small nit on the helmet is the very bottom edge of the rear "plate" on the helmet doesn't have any rubber edge protection, so it can be a bit sharp against the neck when pulling the helmet off (say for a pop up), but this is a very minor issue in my opinion and it doesn't bother him while wearing it.Overall he is much more comfortable in this gear and can move around, throw the ball etc. a lot better. The equipment seems put together well enough and can used by someone else after he outgrows it. I didn't find a lot of manufactures making gear in this size but given how well it fits and the construction, I don't feel like I "settled" on this due to lack of choice. Also, I thought the price (using a Prime account) was quite reasonable.

By brett owen
I have a 7U team. This fits the kids really well. The helment sometimes rubs the back of the neck from flipping off to lood for foul balls. A little padding around the back of the helment would be good to eliminate this. Overall a good set of equipment that fits well if you have a young team.
