By D. A. Smith
The Fender Hot Rod DeVille was the amp I settled on after a long hunt for the right amplifier. For me, finding an amp was about understanding the sound I was looking for. I tried to stay true to my ear and go with my gut. Keep in mind I was looking in the $500-1500 range.I like big full sound: There are a lot of very excellent boutique amplifiers that have incredible tone and wonderful versatility. I tried Mesa Boogie, Dr. Z, Egnater, Line6, Peavey, some Fenders, etc. and found some wonderful amps, but more importantly found what I liked and what I didn't. I like clear high notes (treble) and powerful low end (bass). The issue is that many of the amps with the clarity with the treble lose the punch on the low end. I wanted to have my cake and eat it too. Then I plugged into the 212 DeVille. The goofy name initially caught me off guard: "Hot Rod DeVille? Like... Cruella DeVille?" and I didn't want to like it. Also, I've always kind of had an allergy to Fender-they're just too popular! But I was FEELING this amplifier. Feeling the low end. Feeling those beautiful cleans on top (apparently Fender clean is famous. Now I knew why...). I left the store. Tried other amps, but eventually purchased the DeVille. I have to recommend the 212 in particular because the 1x12 doesn't get the low end power that the two speakers give. Plain and simple. The 410 also misses the lows. If you like mids I'm sure the 410 is great, but I'm pretty extreme in my taste, so it just didn't suit me.Why this amp is a great deal: For under $1000 you can rarely get beautiful cleans AND powerful low end.Distortion problem: People complain about the distortion channel here, but I was looking for an amp who had a pure sound I adored. You can muddy with pedals (my guitar has a high gain pickup and a low gain pickup so I can have some great crunch from this amp), but at the end of the day you can never get better cleans than your amp will give you. This amp might not be the best amp $5000 can buy, but for me, this was just perfect.

This is one great amp. The sound is great and the controls easy to see and adjust. This is not a metal amp. I use this for Clapton,ZZtop,SRV and orig. You wont go wrong with this amp

I have owned this amp for 20 years and have just sent it out to be re-tubed for the first time. It is still working fine but has a crackle after it warms up. I assume that the old connections on the tubes are loose. It is an overall great amp and is on a par with the VOX tube 130 that I tried and nearly bought that sold for about $1,000. I put a slight echo on a clean amp and play most of what I hear on the stereo. You will not go wrong. BTW, I bought this amp used 20years ago for $200.00.
