I actually had a Hot Rod Deluxe I years ago and sold it. To me this was like coming back home. It's very simple: 1 channel for clean, 1 for distortion, and a distortion boost. The boost is still as useless as before, in my opinion. This amp is not configured to push hard or break up into full-bore distortion. You will get a heavy overdrive at best that's great for classic rock. If you want it heavier, you have to go with a distortion pedal. On the other hand, the clean channel is superb. It's springy and clear just like a Fender should be. If you do jazz, blues, rockabilly, fusion, country, or classic rock, this is an ideal combo. I got this not only to get back to this tone, but because my playing has moved away from hard rock/metal in the last few years. It suits what I want to do and if I want to dip into the hard rock bag again, I have a Pro Co Rat for it. Anyway enjoy this amp. It's workhorse and won't let you down.

Awesome clean tone! You can make it funky, jazzy, bluesy, even acoustic sounding. As far as the distortion channel, it sounds OK. I use this amp for gigging and recording. I love the tone I get on my studio recordings.Basically you get what you pay for. If your looking to upgrade from a cheaper amp, I would Highly recommend this one.

The Hot Rod Deluxe is the second amplifier from the Hot Rod series that I have owned. It is a reliable amplifier, but it does share a few design characteristics with the other Hot Rod series amplifiers, that I find less than desirable. It has lots of power, and produces powerful, punchy mids and piercing highs that will cut through any mix. However, in my opinion, it lacks versatility. If you're looking for an edgey, rock and roll or "chicken pickin" sound, it does a great job. If you want to back off and achieve a smoother rhythm tone that blends with the band, the Hot Rod Deluxe, in my opinion, sounds a little too harsh. Also, I have owned both the 4x10 DeVille and the 1x12 Deluxe, and it seems to me, that the majority of the volume adjustment is within the first 1/4 turn of the volume knob. I have found this inconvenient, as it proves difficult to achieve good tonal qualities at a nominal volume. The built in overdrive channels are OK, but the Clean channel is very crisp, clear, and loud, with lots of headroom. I recommend using the clean channel and hooking up through your favorite stomp boxes.Overall, I think the Hot Rod Deluxe is a good entry level tube amp. I don't think it is as good as the top shelf price it has. For only a little bit more money, go for a Mesa Boogie. A Vox AC30 or AC15 would also be a more versatile choice. Another option to consider if looking at the Hot Rod Deluxe is the Peavey Classic 30. I owned one of those about 10 years ago and wish I hadn't sold it. They are highly under-rated. They cost less than the Hot Rod Deluxe, and in my humble opinion, they seem to be built better, have better tonal qualities, and are more versatile.Pros:1. Reliability2. Bright, powerful "cut through the mix" potential3. Asthetics: Black tolex, silver grill cloth and CHROME control face with vintage 1950's Fender styling... yes, please!4. Weight: It is considerably lighter than other similar amps, like a Vox AC15 or AC30, and if you're carrying your amps all over creation like I do, that deserves a few points.Cons:1. Lack of Versatility: It's sort of a "one trick pony."2. Volume Control: The volume control is annoying, but not intolerable, and can be modified by changing the pot.3. Overdrive Channels: They leave a lot to be desired... I never use them anyway. Get a good Tubescreamer and a ProCo Rat.
