4Quite a pleasant surprise
By Alex
Typically, when the name SkullCandy comes up in a headphone discussion, people are quick to dismiss them as a cheap, nothing special brand of headphones. And I can understand that totally. Their pickings across the board are not anything special, in my opinion. The only reason I considered these in the first place was how stylish I thought they looked.Upon receiving them, and giving them an initial test run, I was surprised to hear that these headphones have some actual merit to them. Bass is present, but not overwhelming. As such, the mids and highs are very clear and not muddled. I have three other pairs of headphones, all Sony: MDR-V6, XB-700s, and the Marqii. I'm fairly certain that these SkullCandy Aviators edge out my other pairs as my preferred audio experience. Overall, I can say I am very satisfied with the sound experience.Comfort-wise, these pairs aren't much to speak about. I wear plastic frame glasses and after a period of extended use, I can feel a bit of soreness developing after using these. Non-spectacled users may have a different experience.Build-quality on the main body of the headphones was very good, and felt quite solid. I do get paranoid that I might smash the side of my head into something a bit too hard and crack the ear-cups, but no accidents yet. However, I'm not too thrilled with the cord, and mic/button combo. The mic/button controls on the cord feel EXTREMELY cheap (very light-weight plastic, no tactile feedback on middle buttons); completely unacceptable for headphones this expensive. But you can't have it all, I guess. To sum it all up, I initially bought these for their stylish look, and got very good sound-quality as a pleasant surprise. Overall, I am quite satisfied with my purchase, though I cannot say I would buy from SkullCandy again. Even though they churned out a gem in this pair, I can't say it really changes how I perceive them as a brand, especially with the cheapness I see in the cord and mic/buttons.I think for most users, the main hurdle is the price. Is it worth the price of $150? My honest answer is no. But just like some people will spend money on $300 Coach bags, $200 shoes, etc., there will be people who will spend $150 to buy the style and good sound quality at a slightly exorbitant price.

5Sound as good as they look
By re4l_mu5ic
These headphones sound great. Far better than any Skullcandy product I have listened too. Skullcandy does not have a reputation for great sound quality, but these headphones should start changing that. I have some Shure SE 530's and the Skullcandys bring out a few details that I can't hear in the Shures. The balance is just right, with enough punch from the bass to rock out, but nothing is drowned out. I'm not an audiophile, but I demand sound quality. Everything I've listened to in these sounds amazing. Some examples of what I've played through them are Mumford and Sons, Common Market, Ron Sexsmith, The Black Keys, Lemon Jelly, and The Faint. Everything sounded awesome.I could sleep in these headphones. They are amazingly comfortable. The earpads are soft and plush. I have worn them for hours with only the slightest discomfort. Most likely thats just me getting used to them. I haven't used anything but ear buds for years! These headphones look awesome. I was looking at getting the Grado SR80i's, but I couldn't get over how ugly they were. Some people like them, but I'm not a fan of the cheap black plastic look that headphone makers seem to love. The quality of the build is great too. Solid. I tried the Beats by Dre solo, and the hinges feel cheap and sloppy. The hinges of this are sturdy and the motion of them feels deliberate, not sloppy.Skullcandy has a lifetime warranty. No one else comes anywhere close to that. Grado's is only a year. Shure gets up to 2 years, but still, I'll take lifetime. The carrying case is awesome. I don't know if it's real leather, but it sure feels like it. Either way, it's a high quality case that should last a long time and keep these headphones protected.

4Great, but one fundamental flaw that, in the end, made it a dealbreaker...
By Sweetcheeks
Got these last fall for my birthday (a gift from me, to me). Sounded AMAZING. No real gripes about the sound, it was so clear and amazing, put my old bose in ear headphones to shame. Bass wasn't as punchy as I had expected, but it was still there, rather balanced and not over-done.Style wise they're sleek and cool, I got a lot of comments about them.Unfortunately... Design flaw is in durability. Less than a month after my first pair (Which were the black ones), I accidentally got a little tug on the wire when moving some stuff around on my desk... David Frum on The Colbert Report instantly cut to only the left: the right cup went out; no sound. Frantically looking online to file a claim, it wasn't on the skullcandy website, so i called, and was informed that it's so new and exclusive that I simply ship it in and they'll credit me on the skullcandy store online. Did that, and it got there (Vermont to Utah) after about a week and a half. Got a call from the rep i sent it to, letting me know my account was credited (support was pretty good. not stellar/amazing, but i sent them in, and got my credit very efficiently). Ordered the white pair.. and as someone said in another review, i began to treat it like it was in a freakin' museum. I didn't want it to break again, that would be terrible. So I babied it for months and months. Several months ago, I noticed the plastic connecting the fabric cable to the plug had torn. I couldn't ignore it, and babied it even more (to the point that even the slightest tug i would frantically plug it back in and test if they were still working). What got worse was, after spending a day out and about going across town with my laptop and headphones, in their provided travel case, I get home to find they broke again. Inside the hinges, there are small metal pieces that are slightly springy that keep the cups tighter around your head. One of them broke off, making the fit MUCH looser and lopsided. i was very dissapointed... but still i loved the sound of them. i basically rigged them inside the hinges, to make them more balanced with fit, by gluing a cut up eraser into the hinge.. it worked for a day, so i kept re-doing it for the past two months. at this point i became fed up.That day I didn't do anything rough or crazy with my backpack that could possibly have caused them to break again. Their fragility has made me too paranoid about them, i don't take them anywhere and seldom use them now out of that concern. I just found an alternative that i've tried out in an apple store: they don't have the fragile hinges (they don't have any hinges and are steel and 'memory-metal') and the cable is fabric, but also KEVLAR reinforced.I'm getting my new pair in the mail tomorrow, and i'm looking forward to a great sounding and durable pair of phones.the sound on the aviators is great, but how fragile they are has now, even after being a loyal listener since September, made them unacceptable as my headphones.recommendation: get a pair that sound this good and are durable (not beats by dre, they're worse in terms of durability), I know i am and i'm looking forward to being able to walk around with them on or in my backpack without any worry of damage.Pros: Sound great.Look great. In line mic and controls.fabric cable (better material)Cons: Straight jack connector (more prone to damage).Fragile cable.Fragile hinges.
