By Silence Dogood
There is no review for these boots yet, and I think that is a grave injustice to some awesome boots. I am an avid backpacker going back to my boy scout and AT days and an employee with a nationally respected independent sporting goods store. I recently purchased these boots for the purposes of heavy backpacking and I could not be happier.1: The fitI have a wide foot, and I was a little nervous getting these. I can't attest for people with triple or quad E feet, but these broke in beautifully for me, no doubt due to the lower tapering on the boot's rand, which allows the leather to stretch very nicely. The boot is actually ridiculously comfortable, even before the Superfeets I eventually put in, and I have even worn them to work with no discomfort (disclosure: I wear Smartwool mountaineering socks with this boot, as should you!).2: The functionI have worn these around NYC and in upstate NY, and I must say they work a thousand times better than I ever dreamed. Their weight is practically unnoticeable, and even with more weight than anyone else in my hiking party I was able to go at a faster, sustained pace than anyone else there. On steep rock climbs and iffy terrain they were able to power through, and I lost no momentum at any point, even when rocks shifted under my feet. They also kept their grip exceptionally well, going over wet limestone and wet leaf covered wood with ease. The only sip I ever had was when the boots actually ripped some lichen right off a rock. Though I haven't done any serious mountaineering with them, I have been able to climb on rocks pretty effectively with these boots, with and without a pack (I was able to test this out a little better at rat rock in central park, and I was able to pull off some pretty impressive scrambling considering the size of the boot, in places people with dedicated climbing shoes were unable to traverse). Definitely an absolute beast of a boot.I definitely consider this to be the best boot I have ever owned. It seems like it can do practically anything, while keeping me super comfortable and secure. The construction is top notch and, since they can be re-soled, I'm sure I will be using these boots well into the next decade. Get these boots!
