4Absolute standard for squares on the market
By Sam
Yes, you can go on ebay and find 12" machinist squares for $39 and sure they'll "do the job" for most... but if you NEED .0001" accuracy and demand the finest in workmanship, you have little choice but to shell out for the Starrett 20 series squares. The single biggest fault it has is a lack of protective case (for the price, I'm surprised; heck, even a Chinese made one).. Otherwise, this is a top notch professional tool, worthy of the Starrett name. Stay away from the 3020 line of squares which might look the same, but are no anywhere close to as accurate, and hardly cheaper...Pros-First quality tool steel-Most accurate of all squares on the market-good workmanship-Starrett reputationCons-Not the best packaging (comes in several boxes, well protected, but nothing you can reuse, like a wooden box or anything-Finish is "ok" but not what I'd expect for a $600 Starrett... the brush finish is ok, but it's uneven and there are occasional scratches that don't' go in a uniform direction-no "Made in USA" or "Starrett USA" markings... this is reminiscent of the Snapon removal of USA on the 80 series ratchets... suspicious at best, and down right scary at worse.. I know this tool was US made, but I want to see it on the tool to give me that warm and fuzzy and assure me that Starrett will make it's replacement here as well!
