Bottom line: I am clumsy on crutches. Feel 4 times in 3 days after the ankle surgery. Once I got this in and learned to set the parking brakes, I never once fell or lost my balance. That said, the instructions were lacking. When I got this in, there was a large box. The only installation was putting the seat on (which was pretty self explanatory) and putting the steering column in place - which took more figuring out. The knee walker folds down so that you can place it in the trunk or back seat of the car.The walker is sturdy. I have used it on hard woods, parking lots, handicap ramps, carpet, and the gravel driveway at home. The hard woods are too smooth and it is easy to get going too fast. The carpet squares at work have taught me the virtue of walking - alternating my weight on the good leg and the knee of my bad leg. For gravel, it doesn't roll, but it functions as a walker that I pick up and move a bit while my weight is on my good leg. I wouldn't want to go long distance, but it works fine going to and from my car.Downsides:Despite the cushyness of the cushion, my knee gets tired by the end of the day. However, I can only imagine how much less I could handle with crutches, falling every 5 minutes. It is very important to set the parking brake before trying to get on the walker. I did fall once the 2nd day I used it before I figured that one out.Probably the greatest downside is that the instructions are so lacking. "Don't use without lessons in how to use it", but no lessons were available. Honestly: lessons would be best, but it isn't that hard to learn to use. A few helpful hints would be useful though - like find the right height that works for you, shift your weight and walk rather than ride, and set the parking brake.Anyway - one other note, for what it is worth. One of the ladies I work with had to use a knee walker for a couple of months. When she dropped by to check mine out, she was impressed. She liked the parking brakes (which hers didn't have) and the cushiness of the knee pad.Lastly: For me, when I go to work, I have this in the trunk. It is too bulky to keep in the front seat and pull out. I use a crutch to get to the back of the car to get it and then switch to the knee walker. I would love to not need the crutch at all, but I couldn't come up with another way to make this work. This downside doesn't hold me back from giving it 5 stars, but this might effect someone else's ability to use it effectively.P.S. You can easily add a bag or basket to the handlebars to make it easier to carry things as well.

This is the greatest invention since sliced bread. I had foot surgery and have not been able to do any weight bearing for 5 weeks. It is so handy and you can move without fear of falling off your crutches. It steers very well. My only drawback is that the leg your knee goes on does not lower very much. I'm 5'6" and my feet touch the ground just fine, flat-footed, my daughter who is 5'4" has to tippy toe in order to reach the ground. Buying this unit was cheaper than renting one for the time that I needed it.

Today is 04/03/12. I had major foot surgery on 02/14/12 and I still cannot walk without pain. I rented this item from a local medical supply store in Palm Harbor, FL at the tune of $20/week. Well, let's see....I'm at 7 weeks, so I have spent $140 thus far. I am scheduled for my other foot to be operated on this year, so I figured I would just buy the scooter. I called the company I rented from and asked how much to buy the USED product. They told me it would cost $599. I got on here and found it at this price---NEW. I'm buying it from here and returning the one I have now to the supply store. This scooter is wonderful. You don't realize...until you can't walk...how difficult it is to get around. This scooter is awesome. It is a little heavy, if you're a small girl like me, to get it in the trunk, and such. But, it has been a lifesaver. I would DEFINITELY recommend this product to ANYBODY. And, take my word for it. Buy it..don't rent. If you don't need it afterwards, you could always sell it. At this price, it's well worth it.
