5Worked the first time!
By C. Purdy
I couldn't get an HDMI cable fished to my wall-mounted TV, but I did have an Ethernet port behind the TV, with CAT 5e cabling to a central wiring point (in the basement). My electrician was able to get a CAT 6 cable from the separate source location down to the same central wiring point. I used the Intellinet CAT.6 Modular Inline Coupler Female to Female (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001P8B6P4/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i00) to join the two, and a short CAT 6 cable to connect from the wall jack to the Gefen device behind the TV, and Voila! It worked without a hitch. I tested with 1080p forced on (no auto-negotiation), and there were no issues with either audio or video. Keep in mind, this is over 3 different cables, which had me very worried! (As a last resort, I could have cut that to two by rewiring the wall plug into a male Ethernet plug, but I'm glad I didn't have to bother!)Obviously this Gefen product is more expensive than many of the alternatives, but Gefen has a good reputation for a reason, and I needed something that would actually work and not waste my time. The only "cons" that I noticed:1) The power supplies are of the "wall wart" variety, and not low enough profile to easily hide behind a flat-screen on the wall. (The "sender" and "receiver" units themselves are wall-mountable and relatively low-profile.) I was able to work around the size of the wall wart (thanks to inspiration from MacGyver), but it is a challenge worth noting. Be prepared to "embed" the power supply into the wall (i.e. cut a hole in your wall, or have an electrician do a custom box for you) if you want a low profile install with no wires visible.2) The two units are called the "sender" and the "receiver". I checked the temperatures of each junction (sender, CAT 6 coupler, receiver, power supplies, etc.) and they were all fine, except for the Gefen "receiver" unit; it was pretty warm, and I expect that it will get hot -- particularly hidden behind a warm TV. This isn't at all surprising, considering what it has to do, and I was expecting it (and other items) to be significantly hotter than they were. All in all, I can definitely recommend this product. It met my high expectations. Great job, Gefen!

5Save yourself the headache, Gefen works
By Eric Skiff
Before I purchased this HDMI extender, I bought a cheaper product. What a headache. It was a 1x4 extender, which seemed like a bargain given that it was cheaper than a single 1-port version available from other manufacturers. The manual was horrible (not that you need it anyway, there's nothing to configure), and the product only worked up to about 30' of Cat 5e cable. When I tried it on the longer run I needed (120'), sometimes it worked and sometimes not. Sometimes it worked on one port and not others. I don't have time or desire to plug/unplug things in when I use my system, so I did my homework and found the Gefen products. Everything about this product is top notch - the build quality, manual, and performance. Absolutely no problems running 120' over Cat5e cable.
