5 of 5 people found the following review helpful.A very nice guitar with nice hardshell case
By Jimmy
I've always wanted an ES335 style guitar. I can't afford a Gibson and the Epiphones are still more than I want to spend. So, based on the pictures and reviews for the seller, I figured it was worth a try. This guitar looks beautiful! The online photo is very accurate. The hardware is solid and shiny. The case has a metal plate with the Kona logo on it and it has a nice plush liner. It's formed to fit the guitar perfectly and is a great way to ship the guitar securely. It was shipped in a box barely big enough for the case but there was enough bubble wrap for safe handling. The neck and headstock:The tuning machines work smoothly and hold their position well. The nut has smooth grooves that hold the strings at a proper distance from the frets/fretboard. The neck is straight and very comfortable, it is thicker than some of the solid body "rock" guitars I have but it's comparable to my Epiphone Les Paul. The ebony style fretboard is nice and the frets are pretty standard - they aren't flattened like on some of the Les Paul Customs. This brings me to one minor point. The inlays aren't pearl. They seem to be a solid gray plastic. You don't notice this until you are less than 4 feet away from it. That doesn't affect playability, just aesthetics. That is the reason I knocked a point off of the score - 4 out of 5 stars. With the rest of the guitar looking so nice, it would have made it perfect, for me, if the inlays at least looked like pearl. Simulated pearl would have been fine, I would just want the look. The body and electronics:The body has the typical ES335 shape. The finish is very nice - polished to a luster with what I think is a simulated abelone pattern around the front/top edge. The volume/tone pots all work smoothly and are secure. The pickup select switch also works well. It has a typical warm humbucker tone when plugged into my amp. I didn't notice any interference or buzzing, so I think the grounding is solid on the internal wiring. It's not overly heavy - my Les Paul Custom seems to weigh more. The action on the strings was set up decently when it arrived. I'll probably lower it a bit when I change the strings. The back of the guitar is arched similar to the front - typical ES335 design.I'm very pleased with this guitar. I would recommend this to my friends but point out that the inlays could be improved upon which is simply an aesthetic concern.
