Product Description
The Starrett C434-12-4R W/SLC Combination Set has a square head, center head, reversible protractor head, and 12" blade that has 4R graduations (1/8", 1/16", 1/32", and 1/64"). The protractor head is cast iron with a satin chrome finish on the reading surface and black enamel finish elsewhere. It has revolving turrets with direct-reading double graduations of 0 to 180° in opposite directions, for accurate reading of angles above or below the blade. It is reversible, with shoulders on both the front and back for reading on both sides.
The blade is made of hardened steel with a satin chrome finish, and the square and center heads are forged, hardened steel with a smooth black enamel finish. The square head has a scriber, a 90° square face, and a 45° miter face. It can be used for scribing right angles and parallel lines, or as a tri-square, miter, depth gauge, height gauge, or level. The center head accurately locates the center of cylindrical or square work. All heads have reversible bolt locks, and the square head and protractor head each have a spirit level. The combination set comes in a protective case. It has a redemption card for Standard Letter of Certiļ¬cation (SLC), which includes manufacturer information, traceability to National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), quality system compliance to International Organization for Standardization/International Electrotechnical Commission (ISO/IEC) 17025, American National Standards Institute/National Conference of Standards Laboratory (ANSI/NCSL) Z540-1, ISO Guide 25, and Military Standard MIL-STD-45662A statement.

I am awaiting delivery on this high end square combo. Since I have owned Starrett and Brown & Sharpe squares, micrometers, gages, etc for 40+ years, I fully expect this will be 5 star. That is essentially a no-brainer. Just a comment on scale units - I thought about ordering a mixed English/Metric scale such as the 300 mm/11 3/4" because that sounds neat. BUT, prior experience with mixed markings says NO. The markings for English units will not end on an inch marking and measuring inches from that end of the scale can drive one to distraction. If you are used to measuring from the end of the scale, get separate English and Metric scales.UPDATE 02/26/2013I have received the square combo, and I am not disappointed in any way. It is beautifully built and finished, and indeed is a beautiful precision instrument. It is definitely worth the price. It is almost too pretty to actually be used.
