Product Description

Starrett combination square consist of a machine-divided, hardened and tempered steel rule (or blade) on which is mounted an adjustable square head. A reversible lock bolt allows the blade to be turned over or end-for-end without removing the lock bolt or nut. This ensures true alignment of the blade and heads. Square head are made of cast iron and are not to be confused with the cheap imitation plastic or die cast heads on the market. The value of Starrett tools is that they are accurate and will last. As the name indicates, this tool can be used for many different purposes - a complete substitute for a whole set of common solid try squares, a 45 degree miter, a depth gauge, a height gauge, a marking or scribing gauge, a level, a plumb and, by withdrawing the blade, it can also be used as a precision rule. This saves littering the workbench with too many tools, each being necessary but may be used less. This results in the goal of all good craftsmen - better accuracy and greater efficiency.

5Sturdy & Accurate
By Mike Beard
This is the same combination square that has been reviewed as the 12" model. I chose the dual scale for the ease of measuring in millimeters but the need to use an inch denominated scale when I'm forced to by the material. The hardened steel as opposed to the cast iron handle is less brittle, and the satin chrome finished rule won't tarnish like the standard steel rule. If you're going pay this much money for an item that is accurate to within .01 for the entire length, you might as well spend the extra for it to last the lifetime that you will own it.It looks great, feels solid. I checked the accuracy using the usual method of tape on white melamine and flipping it over. It seems accurate over it's length, by this method. Some reviews have mentioned that the smooth paint on the hardened steel square makes it look cheap but, it doesn't appear that way on mine. Obviously personal preference. There's no way the scribe is going to fall out so don't worry about that.Appears to be up to Starrett's standards. I'm glad I bought it & I couldn't find it for less money anywhere else than Amazon.
