By Simon R. Mouer
I usually buy the cheapest motorcycle battery available, because most of the time, most of them, including the OEM brand, don't make it through even the mild winters where I live. However, the last three cheap batteries barely made their short 90-day warranty, with the last one making it to 91 days - 1 day beyond the warranty. So I thought maybe paying more for the next battery might be worth it.When I saw this battery had a 2-year manufacturer's warranty, which is twice what the OEM (YUSA) battery offers, I knew this was the next one to try.The MotoBatt MBTX14AU is sold by several vendors, both on Amazon and eBay, as well as other on-line vendors. Some of the other vendors have a better, and more thorough description of the battery. The vendor I purchased from didn't even list all the battery models this replaced, nor use the term QuadFlex, or AGM. Nevertheless. I bought from this one because I have had very good luck buying through Amazon, and the shipping was free, with no taxes.I also visited the manufacturer's website, where a cross listing of vehicles and battery designations confirmed this model replaced my OEM battery. This battery is a QuadFlex, which means it has four terminal locations, one on each corner, which allows you to choose whether the positive-negative terminals are located left to right, or vice versa. That is a very good move by the manufacturer, which allows this battery to be used in many more applications -- replacing 19 different models, according to the manufacturer. When you receive the battery, you have to install the battery posts (included) on the terminals you want to use, which is very easy, and an Allen wrench is included in the box. Also included is a spacer for longer battery boxes, but I didn't need it.When the battery arrived, and the terminal posts installed, I managed to stuff it in the battery box on my motorcycle. It was a very tight fit. I may go back and enlarge the battery box a bit to be sure that nothing touches the frame to transmit vibrations to the battery. Probably most owners wouldn't want to do that, but I have already made a lot of small modifications, including to the frame, and the bike is already 25 years old, long since discontinued, so no loss in value. The battery itself is a sealed battery - No battery acid to add, no vent to bother with, no water to ever add, or battery acid to condense or drip on to the frame. And it came in the US mail fully charged and ready to go. Being sealed, you could mount it upside down, I guess. The battery is a AGM (Absorbed Glass Mat) which is an evolutionary advancement in acid battery design, with mats between lead plates that soaks up all the battery fluid and keeps it in place, as well as making the battery more vibration and impact resistant. (Which is also why it can be shipped through the US mail, and endure all the rough handling by the post office without damage. The battery lists cold cranking amps (CCA) as 190 at -18 degrees Centigrade (O degrees Farenheit). The OEM it replaces claimed 200 CCA. So I was curious how the battery performed under load. When I hooked it up started my bike, it started quicker and easier than a new OEM battery. So I know the CCA of the Motobatt is conservatively listed. The OEM had a 14 amp-hour capacity, while this MotoBatt has a 16.5 amp-hour capacity.Since I just got the battery, I can't say how long it will lasts, or how good the warranty service is. But as I go along, I'll report back with an update if I run into any problems. So far, I am very happy to have found this battery -- and so far, it has more than lived up to my expectations. I would definitely recommend MotoBatt to my friends as the superior battery.UPDATE 13 Dec 2012 --I have this battery installed seven months now, and have left it unattended and unused since the first of September 2012. That's almost 3-1/2 months just sitting there (I bought a new truck to play with). Normally that would mean a very dead battery, but I got on the bike the other day during a warm spell, and the battery cranked the engine over like it was new -- very impressive the way it holds a charge.UPDATE 15 Mar 2013 --Well, three more months have passed without nary a use nor have I yet to use the trickle charger on it. Went out today (75 degrees out) and sprayed some starter fluid in the air intake, and that awsome battery kicked the engine over and started the motorcycle. I have never had a battery that held a charge like this one. I am in awe.

By Pw Henderson
It was a tight fit, it may be slightly tall. But it cranks harder and holds it's charge longer than stock.
